Miniature Riven Beetle Inkwell by HylianJean Miniature Riven Beetle Inkwell by HylianJean
A surprise gift came in the mail last year from a very thoughtful Myst friend here on DeviantArt (thank you again!! ) which included a few lovely little craft supplies. Among them were a few gold-colored, slightly weathered cabochons which reminded us of the shape of Riven's golden beetles.

So here is what I finally got around to making from this kind gift: a miniature version of Gehn's beetle inkwell, part of his writing paraphernalia seen in Riven: The Sequel to Myst. (See a screenshot here: [link] )

I inscribed and inked the lines of the beetle carapace in its back, but I didn't have a good way to drill a hole in it. So, it's not exactly an inkwell, more like Gehn just mounted a beetle on a stand, but I like it just the same. The base is about the size of a dime.

One of these is, of course, reserved for the friend who sent me the gift in the first place. :) The other is for the Make One Share One competition at Myst-Fanclub. (glass plate not included, sorry! ^^; )

Myst and Riven are property of Cyan Worlds and I thank them for their ongoing inspiration of artists like me.

This image is copyright Jean Fioca, please ask my permission before using any part of it. Thanks for looking!

BTW, brilliant solution to inscribe and ink the carapace markings. What tool did you use to do the inscribing?

Shmowzow!:wow: This is incredible!!!!

I've always thought this would be an absolutely killer thing to have a replica of. Plus, mounting a beetle on a stand sounds like exactly the sort of thing Gehn would do.:XD:

Awesome, I made you make up a word! :giggle: Thank you!

I wonder if Gehn is the trophy hunter type or whether he's too snooty even for that!

I took that word from Adventure Time actually, my sister and I have very recently discovered that show.:XD: Perhaps it would have been more myst-like to say "wohbanobongu!"

Meh, trophy hunter or not, he'd probably just do it to relieve tension.

"I'll call this one... Atrus!" *stab*

I mean, Achenar had to get his tendencies from somewhere, right?

I never really got into MYST when it came out. I grew up on macs and I'm not sure it was out for mac originally. Also, my parents weren't really into us playing games, but we still somehow acquired some Lucas Arts adventure games, so in theory, it would be right up my alley, but these days, i don't think I have the patience to sit down and figure out all the puzzles....

I'd say Riven at least is worth seeing even if you just use a guide the whole way through. But I know what you mean. I've just got to try to share the media that I love. :D

for the beetle: It is SO awesome! You really make me want to play RIVEN again, this brings back so many good memories... and it's an awesome piece of work you've created here <3
